Frequently Asked Questions
Q. What do I wear for my polo lessons?
A. It is best to wear jeans, comfortable loose fitting shirt, and riding boots if you have them. If you don’t have riding boots you can wear any shoe or boot with a small heel. If you already ride horses, please feel free to ride in whatever you normally use. A helmet is required which we can provide or you may bring your own.
Q. Do I need to know how to ride a horse to learn to play polo?
A. No! At OC Polo you can learn the sport from the ground up, no experience required.
Q. What if I don’t own a polo pony?
A. No problem! We will supply the horses to start and as skill level advances you will want to purchase your own polo pony. OC Polo has a string of excellent polo ponies who are experts at teaching both new and experienced riders the exciting sport of polo.
Q. What equipment do I need for a polo lesson?
A. Nothing! OC Polo provides everything from the horse, to mallet to helmet. If you have your own equipment and would like to bring it please feel free to do so.
Q. Can I use my own horse for a polo lesson?
A. We recommend that your first polo lesson be on one of our horses. However, many non polo ponies have been converted to be able to play the game well.
Q. What will I do in a polo lesson?
A. Your first polo lesson will entail a brief explanation of polo rules, mounted riding instruction and hitting technique. As you progress in your game, we will pair you with other players of similar skill levels so you can practice in a game environment.
Q. What are the age ranges or genders that usually play polo?
A. There are no specific age or gender specifications. We teach anyone who can get themselves on a horse, generally starting children as young as 3-4 years of age. We have found that by putting children on horses early helps increase confidence later. Typically the younger children do more games (such as Simon Says and Tag) vs disciplined instruction as per horse show stables. Our focus for our children’s program is on safety and fun.
Q. When can I watch a real polo game?
A. Typically, we play club chukkers on Thursday nights at 6pm and have practice games on Saturday and Sunday at 10am (see updated schedule posted under the “club chukka” tab). However, sometimes these times change slightly so call ahead to confirm. You and your guests are welcome any time.
