What Is Polo?
Of all the amateur and professional sports played today, few stir the imagination as polo does. Inspired by the bond that developed when man first domesticated his horse, the game quickly spread to the opulent empire of 6th century B.C. Persia…across the sun-swept deserts of Arabia, through China, Greece, Japan, India, England, Argentina, the United States…and inevitably, to Southern California.
With beautiful weather and landscape, Orange County offered an ideal setting for the game. During the heyday in the 1930s and ’40s, ranchers and townspeople played on the grassy fields of Garden Grove, where picnic baskets and polo became a regular Sunday sight!
Now, with open space having given way to development, the center of this action-packed equestrian pursuit has moved to the Orange County Club in Coto de Caza, where a new generation of spirited arena polo players at all levels are enjoying the sport.
The polo club began operation in Anaheim, California in 1980 under the name Winston Polo Club. As it grew, it moved to Huntington Beach and assumed the name Playa Grande Polo Club. In 2005, it moved to El Toro, California and changed its name to Orange County Polo Club to reflect its broader roots.
Orange County Polo Club’s activities include polo lessons, scrimmages, tournaments, polo trips and an active social life. Barbeques after the matches are a common event with all members of the families taking part. Most of the Club’s members learned the game of polo at the Club and have purchased polo horses and become active members of the Southern California polo community. Each year, a contingent of OC Polo Club members travels to Buenos Aires, Argentina to attend polo camp and watch the Argentine Open. This is the best polo in the world and the trip has helped members improve on their polo while enjoying the restaurants, shops and ambiance of Buenos Aires!
